UWO Executes Carbon Steel Elbows for a Tier 1 Alberta Oil Sands Refinery

UWO was awarded 18, 4” dia. spools and were required to executed within a quick schedule for our tier 1 Albert oil sands refinery client. The execution of the project was performed ahead of schedule, on budget with high qualitative deliverables and required testing parameters. Our client required us to apply 2 layers WOL (weld overlay) with a min. thickness of 3/16” (4.8mm).

  • First layer: ERNiCrMo-3 (Alloy 625) as a base layer
  • Second layer: of ER CCoCr-A (Stellite #6®) to assist in reducing the erosion rate

Overlay Alloy:

Two layers of WOL on Internal Dia. and gasket faces

  • First layer: 2-2.5mm ERNiCrMo–3 (Alloy 625)
  • Second layer: +3mm ER CoCr-A (Stellite #6®)

Elbow specifications:

  • (2) 4” 600# RFWN flanges sched. 120 SA182 F9
  • (1) 4” 90 Deg. LR elbow sched. 120 SA234 WP9 CL1
  • (1) 4” Pipe sched. SMLS 120 & 160 SA335 P9

Testing Included:

  • PMI: Base Material per ASME Sec II part A
  • RT: 100% BW (butt weld) before PWHT
  • UT Thickness: base material / final WOL
  • PT: 100% final WOL before & after PWHT (1/16” cracks allowed @ no max. length)
  • Hardness test: final WOL (280 HV/10 min)
  • PWHT: 2hrs @1350 deg. F
  • UT Shearwave: 100% BW after PWHT
  • Hydrotest: 10mins @ 2263 psig
  • VT: 100% final weld assembly
